PLACE is a global non-profit technology organization formed from the Property Rights initiative at Omidyar Network in 2020. PLACE solves for the inefficiencies of modern-day mapping by creating a trusted intermediary between public and private good providers to deliver hyperlocal, accurate and detailed optical imagery of the earth’s surface that everyone needs but is difficult to produce, and to maintain on their own.
PLACE partners with government agencies authorized and responsible for mapping urban and peri-urban areas in their country, and provides funding, training for mapping and processing of data. All data produced in partnership with PLACE belongs to the government. In return, PLACE receives from each government an irrevocable, perpetual, royalty free license to a copy of the data for its use by PLACE Community members.
PLACE (and previously as Omidyar Network) has been innovating in drone technology since 2016. From quadcopters to fixed wing drones, from coverage in hectares to square kilometers, from endurance in minutes to hours, PLACE is focused on delivering cadastral grade imagery suitable for a range of use cases whether high positional accuracy is required or not.
