Contingency Procedures

Contingency procedures are executed once a flight has begun. It deals with change in wind direction, obstacles on the landing site, modifying flight plans etc.)

Once PLACE Aerial is airborne operators must continue to monitor conditions for any unexpected behavior of the UAV. Operators must be alert to changes in weather conditions (such as storms, wind gusts, and rain) and potential hazards on the ground (such as loose animals, moving vehicles, and people in the launch area) as well as manned air traffic. A Site Coordinator is responsible for monitoring the environment around the UAV at all times and communicating with visitors.

Change in wind direction

PLACE Aerial lands into the wind. If the wind direction has changed, adjust the flight plan accordingly and re-upload while the plane is in flight. If the plane is already en-route to the landing spot, put the plane in loiter mode then adjust the flight plan, re-upload it and disengage loiter mode.

Crash/hard impact avoidance

Should PLACE Aerial come in too fast during landing, or it looks as though it will hit the ground hard or hit something, abort the approach and put the plane in loiter mode and re-attempt the landing.

Safe loitering points

When preparing mission plans an operator should include at least 2 loiter points north/south or east/west of the area being flown. These loiter points should be used in cases where a flight operations have to be aborted whether a result of a hard impact landing, change in wind direction or the approach of manned aircraft.
